Love 30! MNT League Hits Thirty Years at Forest Lake
by Craig Tidwell
Long-time Forest Lake Tennis Club member Jon Michelson assumed the role of league coordinator for the Monday Night Tennis program in 1996. The doubles league plays on Monday nights year-round from 7:30 to about 9:30 pm and uses six courts in the winter and five courts in the summer. Although a few women and junior players have played on occasion, the players are generally adult men at the 3.5 to 4.0 ability level. Over the years, Michelson estimates that the league has had over three hundred participants.
Being an Actuary, Michelson is naturally fond of numbers and statistics, so it’s no wonder that he keeps meticulous records of the league results. “The league strives to balance competitiveness with camaraderie, and that is the type of player we tend to attract”, said Michelson. At the end of each season, Michelson has the “Flakey Awards” which denote fine play as well as some silly achievements as well.
