Riney Family Tennis Center at MICDS: A Treasure for St. Louis Tennis
by Craig Tidwell
Since its opening in 2025, the Riney Family Tennis Center quickly emerged as a premier outdoor tennis facility. The facility was designed by Centerbrook Architects and built by BSI Constructors. Featuring twelve championship courts equipped with scoreboards and state-of-the-art on-court cameras, the facility has become a destination for competition, player development and community outreach.
The site hosts the annual “Tournament of Champions”, which showcases the top talent in high school tennis. Beyond the obvious connection with high school tennis, the tennis center has also embraced opportunities to grow the game. Through the efforts of local Tennis Professional Cameron Thomas, the facility has formed a strong bond with The Net Rushers charity, which provides tennis opportunities to inner-city youth.
“The on-court cameras have given us a way to take instruction to the next level”, says MICDS Boys Head Tennis Coach Patrick Huewe. “The team rooms, scoreboards, elevated viewing and public announcement system also provide amenities that one would not normally expect”. The result has been a better experience for both the players and spectators alike. In fact, the on-court cameras can live stream matches that allow family and friends to watch matches without even being in attendance.
The facility has already hosted some UTR competitive play, and the future holds even more exciting possibilities. USTA sanctioned play and even a pro tournament could very well be next on the agenda. “We don’t want to move too fast, too soon”, remarked Coach Huewe. “We want to manage our growth in a careful and thoughtful way”.
Whatever the future may bring, there is no doubt that the new tennis center has raised the bar for outdoor tennis in the St. Louis area.
